Tourists

The linocuts series “Tourists” came about in 1998 during a stay in Granada for half a year. I let the tourists pose because it made them very aware of themselves. The surrounding that I used later as a background to the tourists is heedless. I didn’t place them in front of the Alhambra but chose the building of the blind lottery “Once” or a stall with plastic toys. This emphasizes the “estrangement” which is also literal here. The everyday Spain still withdraws itself from the hasty society now and then. The tourist, who also wants to escape from the daily haste, remains “on a journey” and therefore an outsider. I myself did not escape from my own mockery and modeled for the Dutch tourist in full kit, with a bag pack and shorts!
